Improved optical mass tracer for galaxy clusters calibrated using weak lensing measurements

چکیده
We develop an improved mass tracer for clusters of galaxies from optically observed parameters, and calibrate the mass relation using weak gravitational lensing measurements. We employ a sample of ∼13 000 optically selected clusters from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) maxBCG catalogue, with photometric redshifts in the range 0.1–0.3. The optical tracers we consider are cluster richness, cluster luminosity, luminosity of the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) and combinations of these parameters. We measure the weak lensing signal around stacked clusters as a function of the various tracers, and use it to determine the tracer with the least amount of scatter. We further use the weak lensing data to calibrate the mass normalization. We find that the best mass estimator for massive clusters is a combination of cluster richness, N200, and the luminosity of the BCG, LBCG: M200ρ̄ = (1.27 ± 0.08)(N200/20)1.20±0.09[LBCG/L̄BCG(N200)]0.71±0.14 × 1014 h−1 M , where L̄BCG(N200) is the observed mean BCG luminosity at a given richness. This improved mass tracer will enable the use of galaxy clusters as a more powerful tool for constraining cosmo-

Galaxy Halo Masses from Weak Gravitational Lensing
In this review, I discuss the use of galaxy-galaxy weak lensing measurements to study the masses of dark matter halos in which galaxies reside. After summarizing how weak gravitational lensing measurements can be interpreted in terms of halo mass, I review measurements that were used to derive the relationship between optical galaxy mass tracers, such as stellar mass or luminosity, and dark mat...
متن کاملWeak lensing mass reconstructions of the ESO Distant Cluster Survey ⋆
We present weak lensing mass reconstructions for the 20 high-redshift clusters in the ESO Distant Cluster Survey. The weak lensing analysis was performed on deep, 3-color optical images taken with VLT/FORS2, using a composite galaxy catalog with separate shape estimators measured in each passband. We find that the EDisCS sample is composed primarily of clusters that are less massive than those ...
متن کاملA Lensing Survey of X-ray Luminous Galaxy Clusters at Redshift
Aims. We present a wide-field multi-color survey of a homogeneous sample of clusters of 11 galaxies aimed at measuring their total masses and their mass distribution from weak lensing. Mass determinations, independent from X-rays measurements, are needed to calibrate the scaling relations of clusters, such as the M − T and the M − LX relations. Methods. The 11 clusters in our sample are all X-r...
متن کاملKinematic effect in gravitational lensing by clusters of galaxies
Gravitational lensing provides an efficient tool for the investigation of matter structures, independent of the dynamical or hydrostatic equilibrium properties of the deflecting system. However, it depends on the kinematic status. In fact, either a translational motion or a coherent rotation of the mass distribution can affect the lensing properties. Here, light deflection by galaxy clusters in...
متن کاملCosmology with Galaxy Clusters II. Projection Effects on Hubble Constant and Gas Mass Fraction
It is well known that a combined analysis of the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) effect and the X-ray emission observations can be used to determine the angular diameter distance to galaxy clusters, from which the Hubble constant is derived. The present values of the Hubble constant derived through the SZ/X-ray route have a broad distribution ranging from 30 to 70 km s−1 Mpc−1. We show that this broad ...
